Masks have been used for centuries all around the world as a means of protection from outside influences. They can ward off spirits, conceal the identity, and offer peace of mind in many different situations. Masks are also used to provide spiritual guidance or as a symbolic image for a character or organization.

We're here to talk about the masks created by MF DOOM, an American rapper and record producer who blends elements of hip-hop music with metal, rock, blues, and jazz influences. In fact, we'll be sharing the story behind his "MF" doom mask which he originally wore during concerts and photoshoots up until 2001 when it was stolen.

History of MF Mask

This unique mask has taken on a mythical status amongst fans of DOOM, and for good reason. It's been featured in many different forms, including as a large tattoo on his body, or simply taking the form of a pair of spectacles. The mask itself has been subject to various interpretations and revealed through the years; whether it be a fake or real mask, with an eye hole or no eye hole at all.

The mask initially debuted in 1995 with DOOM's "Operation: Doomsday" album where it was used as a snarling visage for his cover art. It remained as his logo through several albums and singles until 2001 when it was stolen during a photoshoot by former photographer Keith Williams. The photographer was actually threatened with legal reprisal from DOOM's record label, Metal Face Records.

Over the years, the mask has taken the form of a large tattoo on his back and as a pair of sunglasses. However, the question remains: what was originally under that mask? The most common interpretation is that the first mask was DOOM's own face, or perhaps some sort of creature puppet. Other variations include simple face paint (the type you can purchase from any Halloween store) or a hand puppet.

Features of MF Doom Mask

The MF Doom mask is an instrument that was created by the multi-platinum selling rapper, MF DOOM. The mask is made to increase the inhalation of air during one's breathing process and create a louder sound than usual. It was first used on the song entitled "Gas Drawls" from the 2016 album, Its production cost around $5,000 to make with it being manufactured in conjunction with 3D printing technology.

The Doom mask gained popularity and publicity following its use in artwork by renowned graffiti artist Blek Le Rat and comedian Hannibal Buress. The mask is also a fashion accessory and is seen worn by white people mainly in America and Europe.

It was also worn out by Lil Uzi Vert on his song "Money Longer" which features verses from The Boy 2Xplosion and Piff as well as a guest verse from Earl Sweatshirt. On the track, MF Doom raps about his mask, saying that it "cost me all my niggas". The rapper, however, does not specifically state he created the mask himself.

Why Rappers Wear Mask Today?

Ever since MF Doom's popular "Operation Doomsday" release, the rapper-producer has been seen wearing a mask of his face over his head. Today, we take a look at why this is and what he is trying to achieve.

In many hip-hop circles, a rapper who wishes to be taken more seriously and not just be seen as another artist will wear MF doom mask in their public appearances. The most well-known example of this is the iconic Tupac Shakur costumed performer from the 1990s.

The famous B-boy Bobbito Garcia from the "Funkmaster Flex" show in the 1990s wore a mask in his music video appearance to show viewers he was strong and not afraid to break stereotypes about what a black person should be with his B-boy style moves and charisma on camera.

Fame TV shows such as "Lifetime Movie House" and other waxing molds of celebrities often feature rappers wearing masks as well. There are different reasons why rappers wear masks, but the most common reasons have to do with their personal lives. Rappers often wear masks because they are trying to hide their identity of themselves.
